The Borough Council of Wellingborough

A cycling strategy has been approved to set up a network of cycleways, many of them with street lighting, to encourage greater use of the cycle, and less use of the car. Funding of a £2.2 million capital spending program has been promised and work can already be seen on the ground.

Schemes are in hand to regenerate parks and open spaces and to enhance the environment around the River Nene within Wellingborough.  There will be more open space for recreation, natural habitats, better land management, nature trails and cycleways.

That is in addition to what is done on the roads by the County Council with the highway budget.  This level of commitment to cycling is unique in Northamptonshire, Daventry being well back in second place.

The other notable achievement of Wellingborough is the setting up of a cycling forum which is running successfully after starting in November 1999 .  There have been useful discussions on a wide range of cycling issues, a survey of employers carried out, and regular Sunday rides organized.
